How to Choose Art for Styling Your Property for Sale

So you’ve decided to sell your house. Congratulations! You’ll want to make it look as good as possible, right? Well, gone are the days where you just did a quick tidy then open your doors to potential buyers. It is becoming more commonplace to style your home to showcase your home and make it look appealing buyers. And one of the quickest ways to instantly add style is to hang some new artworks on the wall.

There are a few things to remember about the home’s art that will help enhance the look of the home.

The first and most important thing is to remove all family photos and personal art. I’m sure your children are beautiful and talented, but a potential buyer wants to imagine this house as their new home and it will be hard to do that when smiling strangers are literally still “hanging around.” Also don’t forget, that framed finger painting that your six-year-old gave you for your last birthday will have a place in your new home; take it down for now and pack it away until then.

Next take down all of those sporting team posters, celebrity pictures and framed memorabilia. I know they may be your pride and joy – but remember, the goal here is for people to picture this as their home and these images will distract them if they have other interests.

It should go without saying (but I will say it anyway) that very edgy art, such as some nudes, or political and religious symbols should not be hanging on your wall.

Lastly, beware of any small size artworks hanging on your wall. They may be making your room appear smaller than it really is. Read more about why you should go large with you art.

So we’ve talked about all the “don’ts”; how about some “dos”?

First of all, do try to hang one big piece on a wall for the best impact. Or you can go for a gallery wall of smaller artworks that together create a bug impression.

Do hang fairly innocuous pieces, such as landscapes or abstracts. Modern abstract paintings are often best, they instantly bring a dated interior into the current time, give the impression of a more expensive room and add pops of colour.

Do choose artworks in colours that will complement the colours in your home.

And lastly do hang the centre of the artwork at about eye level for an average size person. Artwork hanging too high can make the ceilings appear lower and too low can again make the room look smaller than it really is.

It may sound like a lot of work, but don’t lose sight of your goal: to help potential buyers see themselves in your home and turn them into bidders on auction day!
